In Macbeth there is a clear message of corruption and as we know, corruption is alive in today's world just as much as it was in Macbeth's time. Corruption is dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power.
The Watergate scandal was a major political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s as a result of the June 17, 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., and the Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement. When the conspiracy was discovered and investigated by the U.S. Congress, the Nixon administration's resistance to its probes led to a constitutional crisis. President Nixon had workers spy and take pictures of legal documents from another Presidential campaigner. The president told his employees lies and false allegations about the opposing presidential campaign, tricking them into doing his 'dirty work' for him, to keep his position safe. Nobody would have thought that someone so high and influential as the president of the United States would use his power to cheat the presidential campaign. This coincides with the context of Macbeth because Macbeth was able to use his power to influence the three murderers to murder Banquo by convincing them that Banquo was treating the town badly and destroying their homes. He was using them to keep his identity safe and protecting his reputation. |
