The Lion King and Macbeth
In the start of Macbeth, King Duncan’s death is planned when Macbeth is told by Three Witches that he can claim the throne if Duncan passes away before Malcolm is of age. Macbeth plans with Lady Macbeth to kill King Duncan. After King Duncan is pronounced dead and murdered, his sons flee the area out of fear they might be next. This sounds quite familiar to The Lion King. In The Lion King, Scar (being Macbeth) wants to get rid of Mufasa so that he can take over the Pride Lands with the help of the hyenas (the hyenas being the three witches) before Simba is of age. He does this by murdering Mufasa and manipulating the mind of innocent cub Simba to think it was his fault his father is dead. Scar convinces Simba that if he stays, everyone will hate him for killing his own father.
Simba is now convinced it is his fault his father is dead. Scar persuades little Simba to “run away and never return” and if he does there will be severe consequences. Simba listens to Scar and runs away and does not return to the pride lands until the near end of the movie. In Macbeth, Malcolm and Donalbain flee after their father Duncan is murdered. They both fear they are next on the list since both are in heir of the throne now. They are practically then found suspicious of the murder by everyone else in the castle of Macbeth. The sons became suspects because killing their father gives them a faster chance of becoming king. Although they both know they did not commit the crime, they find it a good idea to split up and not return back to the castle. However, this just makes them even more suspicious of being the murderers. The audience knows that the sons were not behind the murder. It was Macbeth. However, Macbeth is able to pull a similar trick that Scar pulled. Macbeth throws the idea that because the sons are gone it had to have been them that were behind the murder.
In Macbeth, another character is killed off. Macbeth hires murderers to kill his friend Banquo because he feels Banquo is getting too close to solving the murder. Macbeth fears that if Banquo is not taken care of, then he and lady Macbeth will be found out and put to death. After the murder of Banquo, his ghost comes back to haunt Macbeth at the party which makes Macbeth go a bit insane. Lady Macbeth sorts the situation by blaming Macbeth's reaction at the party on a childhood experience and that he has moments like this one a lot.
In The Lion King, Mufasa comes back through the stars, as a ghost, to help Simba fix things. Right before Mufasa appeared in the stars, the baboon Rafiki is believed to be the one who summoned Mufasa. However in reality of the movie, Simba summons Mufasa himself. He needs guidance and his father is who helps him. In Macbeth, Banquo appears out of a guilty conscience of Macbeth. In Lion King, the spirit of Mufasa appears in the stars out of a need for self guidance for Simba. Macbeth had a guilty conscience; Simba was just very much confused.
To end in Macbeth, Macduff comes to fight Macbeth for murdering his wife and children and they have a stand off. Originally, Macbeth had assumed he had nothing to really worry about since the Three Witches had assured him that “No Person Born Of Women’s Womb Shall Harm You”. Macbeth has his head too high in the clouds to realise that some children aren’t born out of their mother’s womb if they have to be surgically removed. Therefore, with Macbeth being selfish and naive Malcolm rightfully claims the throne.
In The Lion King, Simba comes back to fight Scar after realising that it was Scar’s plan all along to get rid of everything standing in his way of taking over the Pride Lands. Scar still sees Simba as being a weak cub and falls because of that. Scar underestimates Simba and his strength. In the end Scar falls off the cliff in the fiery pit of Hell with the Hyenas to devour him; a slightly graphic subliminal message for Disney if I say so. In the happy Disney ending, Simba rightfully claims the throne of Pride Rock and the Pride Lands.
